How to extend the life of office carpet
Washing twice a year costs less than replacing it every two or three.
Office carpet usually fails from wear rather than dirt, and the main cause of wear is grit trapped in the pile.
What happens
Sand and dust carried in on shoes works down into the pile. Every footstep grinds that grit against the fibres — it acts like sandpaper.
An ordinary vacuum cleans the surface but does not lift the grit underneath.
What to do
Put a proper barrier mat at the entrance, at least two metres long — a shoe needs three or four steps to clean itself.
Deep clean by hot water extraction twice a year. That flushes the embedded grit out with water.
The arithmetic
Replacing 200 m² of office carpet runs to several thousand. Washing it twice a year is a fraction of that — and the carpet lasts five or six years instead of two or three.
